We embarked on shearing our 3 Blue Faced Leicester ewes by hand a couple of weeks ago, it was a steep learning curve but actually quite fun. Bought some hand clippers or ‘daggers’ from the local farmers co-op, about £15. Had a volunteer to help hold the sheep, as they are big ones! Got them on their backs, and did a reasonable job I think. Have since heard a local guy who shears his ewes standing up, he just tethers them to a post, wearing a dog collar (says its better than a sheep halter), and he does up to 6 in a day this way. I think we’ll try that next time.
